Dwight decided to go fishing, as he could never pass up fishing, any time, anywhere you could fish. We stopped at a sporting store
so that he could put new 20lb line on his reel, and then went right to the "Rocks" near the pier, where Dwight chose to fish
He was going to try out the Banjo Minnow lures he bought a year ago, the plastic wiggling colorful little fish that Bass fishermen use for bait.
Anyway, Dwight picked a spot where he could give that rod a real good cast. For a long time I sat on the rocks way above, then I saw a
raccoon climb out from the rocks and it scared me so I climbed right up into the truck where it couldn't get me, and watched from there.
Dwight had watched to see what the other fishermen were using for bait, and picked the Banjo Minnow that looked most like the anchovy,
and due to that outgoing tide he had to clamp on three split-shot weights onto the hook to get it deeper in the water..........Not soon after,
I watched as I saw Dwight jerk the line, I've seen him do it so many times before, and viola he's on to one of the great pleasures of his life,
fighting a fish, and testing the line, and working the fish to tire him out, and ......about this time calling for me to get the net, I'm willing but I'm
not that fast on steep rocks! A couple men in a boat stopped to see if they could help and everyone in other boats were watching Dwight.
He hung on and bounced around from rock to rock, and .....yelled "get the net baby, and get the skillet hot!" So I grab the net and start down
the rocks when I hear a yell from someone "Hey, you need help with that net?". I couldn't have yelled any louder to say "yes, yes, here's the net".
This man jumped right down to me, grabed the net and on down the rocks to meet up with my determined fisherman. Dwight instructed this friendly
guy to "just wait, wait until I get him tired and I'll bring him right to you." After 25 minutes battling the monster, sure enough, here came the fish,
there went the net, and the two met up, and Dwight had his fish!
Now the funny thing about this catch was not just that he caught this fish against all odds, because there were 100 boats I counted in the harbor
and only 4 had caught a fish in the time we were there. Dwight's cousin fished all day and never had a bite. The funny thing is that he caught this
fish with that TV banjo minnow! It hooked that fish right in the corner of his mouth, and Dwight was soooooo pleased. That fish was huge,
weighed out to be 37 lbs. I've seen salmon that are as long, 42", but not with such girth. It was shiny and bright and big! "Yea baby", I was yelling
and smiling from ear to ear and some fishermen hollered too.
Every fisherman wanted to know what he used for bait. When he told them the Banjo Minnow none of them could believe it! They never even
got a bite the whole day, and here we were, ready to go with the big fish two hours from the time we started. What a blast! That's when I grabbed
the camera and took these pictures. See that lure hanging out of Mr. salmon's mouth, that's the Banjo Minnow. See the man with the big smile, that's
Dwight.
We went to Lex's Landing to weigh the fish and Larry, (the owner) asked if Dwight would like to enter the contest for the biggest salmon caught,
the weight had to be at least 35lbs. and this one was 37 lbs. The prize was a mount of the fish. He said no, but gave Larry the skin for possibly
mounting later.
This was a very fun trip and it has been a blast to tell the story, (which got around the community in no time at all.) When we mentioned the story
the next day almost everyone we talked to asked "was that you? We heard about you". Good end to a short weekend trip. Thank you Banjo Minnow
we will be using these for a long time to come.
